Before we go on to the next verses in John 2 I thought it would be a wise thing to do is to look at John 2:1-12 again. It is the recording of Jesus' first miracle. According to The MacArthur Bible Commentary by John MacArthur this is the first sign performed by Jesus which demonstrate His deity=turning water into wine. Only God can create from nothing. In the book of John along eight miracles are confirmed and tells us who Jesus is. The fact that Jesus' mother, Jesus and His disciples suggests that it might have been the wedding of a relative. The wine was subject to fermentation. The ancient world, however, to quench thirst without inducing drunkenness, wine was diluted with water to between one-third and one-tenth of its strength. Wine mixed with water was safer to drink than water alone. The Bible condemns drunkenness but it does not necessarily condemn the consumption of wine. The wine that was served had water in it.
